Harry Potter Cake

545A friend’s seven year old wanted a Harry Potter themed cake, which can be quite a challenge for someone like me who does not use fondant or artificial coloring, given how colorful and detailed the world of Harry Potter is. However, as the photo above illustrates, I ended up symbolizing the spirit of the wildly popular fantasy novels with a Hogwarts Spell Book.

Frosted with shiny chocolate ganache, the book sported a black licorice spider’s web, and a blackberry-spider, as well as a marzipan snake. The snake was tinted with spinach and carrot powder for the green and orange hues.

Most fun of all to make was the wand – I shaped a large lump of marzipan around a bamboo skewer, dipped it into melted chocolate, and “carved” in the wood grain with a toothpick.

A gold foil “snitch” finished the magical detail!
